Major Tom: The Penthouse Calgary Dresses Up For
Every city needs one room that makes an ordinary Tuesday feel cinematic, and Calgary’s is on the fortieth floor. Major Tom is equal parts supper club and observation deck — a retro-glam penthouse where the martinis are cold, the duck is burnished, and the Rocky Mountains do the wallpaper’s job.
The Concept
The name tips its hat to Bowie’s floating spaceman, and the interior commits to the era: mid-century lines, warm wood and brass, lighting set permanently to golden hour. But the glamour is load-bearing — the kitchen and bar have earned national attention, with the venue appearing among Canada’s most acclaimed dining rooms. This is a view restaurant built by people who clearly resent the phrase «view restaurant».
What to Order
Regulars open with the famous cheese toast and a flaming Old Fashioned, prepared with due ceremony. The lobster roll and Major Tots bring playfulness; the roasted duck breast and the Alberta steak program bring gravity. The dessert list is short and confident, and the wine cellar covers both celebration bottles and quiet weeknight glasses.
The Space
A ribbon of floor-to-ceiling windows circles the room: to the south and west, the prairie horizon and the Rockies; below, the sandstone spine of Stephen Avenue. Velvet, walnut and brass keep the interior clubby rather than corporate, and the bar — polished, theatrical — is the room’s true stage. Booking a window seat at sunset is one of the city’s great cheap thrills, cocktails notwithstanding.
Who It’s For
Anniversaries, proposals, milestone birthdays — and any evening that deserves a soundtrack and a skyline. Solo travellers do well at the bar.
Good to Know
Should I book ahead? Essential for evenings; window tables are requested at booking and go first.
What should I wear? Smart casual and upward — the room flatters effort.
Is it dinner-only? Afternoon and evening service; the late-afternoon happy hour is a local secret worth keeping.
Which cocktail defines the bar? The flaming Old Fashioned — order it at least once for the ritual.
Is it suitable for special occasions? Few rooms in the city do occasions better; tell the team when booking and they play along.
