Millions of women around the world suffer from domestic abuse, often in silence. In this article, calgarynka shares the story of Denise, who escaped a nightmare, and the shelter that offered her a lifeline.

Denise’s Story

In November 2000, Denise and her daughter fled her husband and found refuge at Discovery House, where they stayed until July 2001. After leaving the shelter, her friends helped her find a lawyer and get back on her feet.

Denise recalls that her life looked perfect from the outside, but behind closed doors lay a dark reality she worked hard to hide. Her ex-husband was a professional, they had a beautiful home, and their lifestyle was high-end—but it was all a facade. This is a common theme in abusive relationships. Friends and family often don’t believe the victim because they think the family is perfect.

She ran away from home during the Christmas holidays, a time of year she certainly hadn’t planned to spend fleeing. She was forced to leave behind her home and pets and had no financial support. Many years later, Denise still doesn’t share her last name to protect herself.

Her abuse started with emotional manipulation, which then escalated to financial abuse and control. Eventually, it turned into physical abuse. This progression is typical: it often begins with small, easily ignored signs that escalate over time to physical violence.

Denise decided to share her story to show young women that escape is possible. You can get away from the abuse, build a new life for yourself, and find happiness. The most important thing is believing in yourself.

About Discovery House

Discovery House is a women’s shelter that opened in 1980. Over the years, the shelter has helped thousands of women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Before the late 1970s, the city had a women’s shelter, but stays were limited to just three weeks. This wasn’t enough time for women to adapt to their new reality, and many were forced to return to their abusers.

Back then, domestic abuse wasn’t a topic of public conversation, and there was little support. When a woman tried to leave, her friends and family would often tell her to go back to her husband and not destroy the family. We’ve come a long way since then, but there’s still work to be done.

The shelter helps women and children find a safe space, support, and the skills they need to build a better life. Discovery House believes that every woman has the potential to achieve great things. When people are safe and empowered, they can easily discover new opportunities.

The shelter also actively works to ensure every woman has access to an inclusive community. They are committed to fighting against racism and homophobia.

Discovery House provides “second-stage” housing, meaning it serves women who need long-term support. Each year, the shelter offers safe housing to hundreds of families in a secure residential complex. Families typically stay for up to a year—the ideal amount of time to get back on their feet. The housing complex includes a secure courtyard, a community room, a kitchen, and access to a library and educational center for the children.

Denise’s story shows that it’s possible to find a way out of any situation. Shelters like Discovery House play a vital role by providing a safe space and the resources needed to start over. Their work proves that with help, self-belief, and community support, the futures of women and children can be changed for the better.

This story is a powerful example for the many girls and women who feel like they’re trapped with no way out.
