The unique prints of Honubelle swimwear reflect the diverse landscapes of Canada. During this time, she contributed to a major international acquisition of assets.

In an interview with Fashion magazine, Julia shared that she had always wanted to pursue design. She initially tried sewing a few items for herself and her friends before deciding to take her passion more seriously. With a professional accounting designation and business experience, starting her own venture wasn’t difficult. By applying her accounting expertise, entrepreneurial spirit, and supply chain experience, Julia helped her brand succeed.

Julia chose swimwear because of her love for surfing and a gap she noticed in the market for active women’s swimwear. She combined her passion for wind and waves with her vision of creating a swimwear brand. The business is partially a family effort: Julia’s father is a graphic designer, and her two brothers manage the technical aspects of production.

Functionality and Natural Beauty at the Forefront

Julia prioritized functionality when designing her swimwear. She invited her friends—fearless, confident women unafraid to embrace their imperfections—to model for the brand. To emphasize authenticity, Julia decided not to edit the photos used on her website and social media.

“This is the real world, not a Photoshopped one with only one size or body shape,” the designer explained.

Honubelle’s collections prove that functionality and style can coexist. There’s no need to sacrifice style for water adventures. Julia expressed her desire to promote authentic beauty, empower people, and encourage a vibrant, active, and eco-friendly lifestyle.

Unique Prints and Eco-Friendly Fabric

Julia found inspiration for one of her prints during her first visit to Canada’s desert. She envisioned capturing lava patterns on swimwear to see how the print would contrast with various skin tones and types.

The jellyfish print symbolizes the unseen elements beneath the surface, metaphorically reminding us to look deeper to find the true essence of things.

Another idea emerged when Julia photographed tall grasses in Fish Creek Provincial Park. This print resonates with Albertans and evokes a sense of home.

In 2016, the brand began using Lycra, an eco-friendly fabric created using the Italian Econyl process. This innovative method recycles nylon waste—such as old fishing nets and carpets—into nylon yarn.

Fishing nets are a significant threat to marine life, as they often entangle sea creatures. Fashion, powered by technology, can help clean up these nets and protect marine species.

Lycra outperforms other fabrics in strength and compression, offering a snug fit while being resistant to chlorine, sunscreen, and tanning oils.

Through Honubelle, Julia has had the opportunity to attend many inspiring community events and contribute financially to meaningful causes and charities. These efforts directly improve women’s lives and boost their confidence.

In the 2000s, Calgary designer Julia Barnes founded Honubelle, a swimwear brand designed to create high-quality products for women of all body types using fabric made from recycled waste.
